Ben Zhu's Dessert Island is short + sweet but an impactful picture book about sharing and caring. Monkey is stranded on a dessert island, ample with frosting, berries, and other delicious sweet things. Meanwhile, Fox is on a desert island, no sweets in sight, just dirt, rocks, and sand. But as time goes on, there are some significant shifts and their fortunes change, and Monkey and Fox begin to see that no animal is an island.
I really appreciated the layers of this story and the allegory of consumption and conservation told in a context that young children can relate to.
