Grandma Gatewood

Grandma Gatewood is an excellent example that you’re never too old to set goals and try something new and challenging. Emma Gatewood grew up in rural Ohio and raised 11 kids alongside a less-than-supportive husband.

At age 67, she decided to walk the Appalachian trail which stretches from Georgia to Maine. Undeterred by the rugged terrain, Grandma Gatewood hiked steep ridges, down ravines, and endured treacherous weather with very little gear.
This story is also a testament to the kindness and generosity of strangers and exudes a sense of wanting to pay it forward. Initially, she told no one of her journey (even her family and friends) but eventually newspapers heard of her adventure, and the entire nation rallied to cheer her on to the end of her trek. A true story of true grit and taking initiative to meet your goals and achieve your dreams at any age.
