When Rosa Parks Went Fishing

There is so much more to Rosa Parks’ story the well-known blurb that’s often attributed to her in history books. Growing up, I often heard the narrative of the quiet little lady who refused to give up her seat to a white man and move to the back of the bus. I do not remember learning about her continued participation and activism for racial equity and the civil rights movement, her dedication to the NAACP, activity in the Black Power movement, or her support of political prisoners in the US.

Rosa Parks’s upbringing, her childhood, her family; all of these shaped the values she held dear and the woman she became. Her dedication to the civil rights movement and activism extended far beyond the Montgomery Bus Boycotts and should be celebrated.
