The Proudest Blue
I’m pretty sure I didn’t know the name for or religious significance of a hijab when I was 7. After reading this, my daughter asked if we have similar head covering traditions in our faith, and the conversation continued from there. The next day, while at a park taking pictures with the fall leaves, my daughter saw a mother and daughter both wearing hijabs and exclaimed excitedly, proudly forming the word “hijab” on her tongue, delighted to have put what she read about in this story into context in real life. The Proudest Blue is a deep, meaningful story, eloquent and powerful in its description and word choice. We read it many times before an email reminded us it was 4 days overdue at the library. A veritable sign of a good book.
