Evelyn the Adventurous Entomologist
My kids are avid bug hunters and this book was a great example of how—with drive and effort—a passion can become a career. Now, while I’m not anticipating that either will grow up to be entomologists, I like to encourage their interests, and this is my solution to the bug situation (in lieu of digging in the dirt myself).
This is the story of Evelyn Cheesman, who defied gender hurdles and stereotypes of the day to become the curator of the London Zoo’s insect house, at a time when very few women held similar jobs. From there she went on to travel the world extensively in pursuit of rare and unique insects, discovering several new species herself. It’s a great real-life story of perseverance and determination and an ode to going for it even when others doubt you.
