The Name Jar

Since we’re officially back to school, thought I’d share some September favorites we used to read in our first month transitioning back to school.

The Name Jar was always a 2nd grade staple. Unhei has just moved to the US from Korea, and worried that no one will be able to pronounce her name on the first day of school, she decides to pick a new name. As the story unfolds, Unhei learns the true meaning of her name, both in its literal translation and in the weight it carries. A beautiful story about how names can be links to culture, heritage, and identity. Unhei soon realizes that what she fears about being “different” are actually traits that make her special and unique.
