Behold The Bold Umbrellaphant
I’ve always loved this collection of poems by Jack Prelutsky. He cleverly pairs animals with objects creating whimsical characters that boast clever details and vibrant personalities. Take the title for example; elephant + umbrella = umbrellaphant. A prepared pachyderm who’s always prepared as his trunk ends in a maroon umbrella, providing shade on the spot in the event of a heat wave or a torrential downpour.
There’s alarmadillos and ball point penguins and clocktopuses among other fantastically creative creatures. I used to use this text as a creative writing prompt, encouraging students to create their own whimsical creation.
