The Gift of Nothing
While it's not a Christmas book per say, I always read The Gift of Nothing to my first graders before we left for holiday break. Mooch's dilemma? What to get the friend who has everything? After hemming and hawing he has a brilliant beyond brilliant plan. This year, he will get Earl...NOTHING! However, nothing ends up being harder to come by than he anticipates.
In a world with so many somethings, Mooch soon finds that nothing is not for sale. And, nothing is quite difficult to wrap! A story about friendship and what really matters in this great big world of somethings. Told with minimalist illustrations, few colors, and with such elegance in that quintessential Patrick McDonnell way. One of my holiday favorites.
